Bring Light to Syria

As the civilian death toll rises, and the repercussions of violence are felt thousands of miles away, it is clear that the international community has to find a path to a peace settlement. It is not enough to defend our values at home, in our newspapers and in our institutions. We also have to defend them in the refugee camps of the Middle East, and the ruined ghost towns of Syria. We must call on our governments to do more to drive away the darkness and help turn the lights back on.

In the worst affected areas, such as Aleppo, 97% of the lights have gone out. The exceptions are the provinces of Damascus and Quneitra, near the Israeli border, where the decline in light has been 35% and 47% respectively.

The #WithSyria coalition have released a hard-hitting film and has launched a global petition at withsyria.com that calls on world leaders to “turn the lights back on in Syria” by boosting the humanitarian response inside the country and helping the more than 3 million Syrians who have fled to Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. Watch the video down below and sign the petition here.

In the face of this darkness ordinary Syrians are committing unseen acts of heroism every day. Inspired by their courage, we must stand with Syria. Having access to light and power is critical for the refugees in Syria. WakaWaka’s solar powered devices provide immediate assistance as well as long-term relief and enables survivors to see after dark and to charge their phones to connect with family members and loved ones elsewhere.

The WakaWaka Power is “among the most valued aid tools we distribute in Syria” (Bob Kitchen, Director Emergency Preparedness and Response of the International Rescue Committee). Currently there are 56,550 WakaWakas in use by Syrian Refugees in camps in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Northern Iraq, with 10.000 on the way. You can buy a WakaWaka Light today and we’ll donate a WakaWaka Light to help Syrian refugees. Or gift 25$ or more to the International Rescue Committee and for every $25 gift we will send one WakaWaka Light to a Syrian family in need. Donate now and let’s turn the lights back on for Syria!
